Photographs From An Unquiet Mind
A new book with three hundred photos from Cory Richards, celebrated National Geographic Photographer and professional mountain climber, speaks to his own long-time mental health journey.
Richards received a diagnosis of Bipolar 2 at fourteen years of age and, as a youth, was unflinching in his desire to become the only American to climb Pakistan’s Gasherbrum 11 in winter.
Bi-polar: Photographs From An Unquiet Mind offers readers striking images are purposely organized by the emotions that pull at him be it: Fear, love, awe, curiosity or contempt. Richard’s hope, he says in his introduction is “that the book spurs you to a conversation within yourself and others about the way the world moves you, even when it hurts to look”.
The collection has been called a “stunning visual diary of his career’s work” and, as Richard’s suggests to interviewers, and its clear to see, photography has been his anchor.
Ten Speed Press published Bipolar: Photographs from an Unquiet Mind by Cory Richards on October 15, 2024. The book is available in hardcover and ebook.
