When a child can hold a doll that looks like them, it is a simple, yet potentially life-changing, step towards them feeling seen and accepted, according to Amy Jandrisevits, a former social worker and founder of A Doll Like Me.
Dolls are important in play and imagination and they help children make sense of their world. They can help children cope with stressful situations and, most importantly, they can help a child feel confident in who they are. Because of that, dolls should look like the children who love them!
With her non-profit, Amy has made it her mission to craft look-alike dolls that reflect a child’s unique characteristics, particularly if they have visible physical differences. Each custom-sewn doll is gifted free of charge made possible because of donations.
