Thumbs UP…to The Salvation Army for releasing the 2023 Canadian Poverty and Socioeconomic Analysis, which reveals that inflation, housing security, and food affordability persist as top issues. The report finds that single parent families are facing the highest degree of hardship across the country, some do not have enough income to cover their basic needs. The Salvation Army expects to sustain its current levels of service to support Canadians dealing with challenges and will continue to help direct resources where they’re needed most.
Thumbs down…to the Sudbury teacher for allegedly punishing a special needs student with what she termed a “boot camp” at her own home at the request of his parents. She is accused of abusing a student verbally and psychologically, and committing acts, “that would reasonably be regarded as disgraceful, dishonourable or unprofessional.”
Thumbs down…to the Montreal Planetarium for denying a child on the autism spectrum on a field trip the ability to bring her communication device inside the auditorium for a show. Following complaints from the family, the Planetarium has since issued an apology, offered the school a full refund, and promised its staff will undergo reinforced sensitivity training.

Thumbs UP…to the Canadian Transportation Agency who has fined Air Canada $97,500 after a passenger was made to drag himself off a plane in Las Vegas. The passenger, who uses a motorized wheelchair, has spastic cerebral palsy. The Air Canada crew in Las Vegas told him that no assistance was available. The incident left him in pain for days. The CTA said the airline must pay for “several violations of the Accessible Transportation for Persons with Disabilities Regulations.” Air Canada has 30 days to appeal.
