Sex and Gender Analysis in Workplace Health

Adding the lens of sex/gender to the study of workplace stresses has revealed surprising new insights. In a recent study by the Institute for Work and Health, researchers predicted the link between work stress and life stress would be stronger among men than among women, as prior reports had suggested. However, the study found no difference between the sexes in this measure. In addition, both sexes experienced a similar impact from low coworker support, which was linked to greater work stress (but not life stress) among both men and women.

There were, though, some unexpected sex/gender differences. For example, the researchers identified a link between high job strain and higher life stress among women but not men, while low job control was linked to lower life stress among men, but not women.
